In 1 Samuel chapter 9 Saul and his servant are unable to find their lost herd of donkeys, so what do they do? They decided to get direction from the prophet. It is on this path, of seeking to follow the words of a prophet, that Saul becomes king and Israel eventually saved. Saul's event had the idea to seek out the prophet, and Saul followed his servant's council. Both are great examples in this aspect.
Also, when Samuel spoke highly of Saul, Saul responded saying that he was off the lowliest tribe of Benjamin and asked why the prophet spoke so of him. The story of Saul foreshadows the coming of Jesus Christ, who comes to this earth in the lowliest manner only to realize His mission of redemption and salvation, becoming the King of Kings.
One message in both of these stories can be applied to our own lives - we are never too lowly, we are never too little, we are never not enough for God to work through us and on us. We can do great things when yoked with our Savior, and greatest of all, He can rescue us, no matter where we are. We must turn to Him and allow Him to change us.
