Exodus 19:4

Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles’ wings, and brought you unto myself.

I can't help but wonder if J.R.R. Tolkien got his eagle inspiration from here, the grand story of deliverance in history. This scripture helped me draw on his symbolism and appreciate his works a bit more.

Why couldn't the eagles simply carry the hobbits to Mordor? They had to learn and grow for themselves. However, after all the mortals had done all they could, they were saved by the divine intervention of god. Similar to the Israelites, it was not their own strength that saved them, and similar to us, who are incapable of saving ourselves - the Savior bares us on eagles' wings to rescue us, to bring us to Him.

Whether we are trapped between an army and the Red Sea, or simply walking into Mordor - God will save us.

What does He ask in return? A broken heart and a contrite spirit. He asks us to give up our sins to know him (much like casting a beloved ring into fire).

I don't always love the journey. It's hard. It's so very hard. But I'm grateful for it, and I know who I put my trust in, and He is powerful to save.
