The stone is not cut by man, but by God, representing that His grace is what saves us.
Exodus 20
25 And if thou wilt make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone
The stone is not cut by man, but by God, representing that His grace is what saves us. Unlike the tower of Babel, but not unlike the stone cut from the mountain without hands.
Today we are asked to sacrifice a broken heart and a contrite spirit, to lay our will as a sacrifice on the alter.
An alter made of unhewn stone reminds us that God's ways are higher than our own. In constructing one it also allowed the Israelites to practice obedience and sacrifice.
Other thoughts that come regarding constructing an alter include it having to be done stone by stone or line upon line, other stones we are familiar with include the keystone and cornerstone, all the stones must be of God -no unclean thing can enter His kingdom.
