In Numbers 21 we learn that the the children of Israel began to "loathe this light bread". They complained because of the monotony of their situation. This is where gratitude is so important, and preceding gratitude, a realization of our fallen state. They would have died without this daily bread, and we are spiritually dead without the daily bread of the gospel. When we understand the Fall, we are more grateful for the redemption and do not complain.

Because of their murmuring, the Lord caused fiery serpents to plague them. So He could straighten them (1 Nephi 17). He did this for their benefit, so they could focus again on the Savior and draw near to Him. The brass serpent that Moses raised, a type of Christ, became the sifter going forward. Those who did not focus on the serpent, the Savior, perished, and those who did focus on the Savior were saved and then able to move on, conquer, and begin living in cities. Almost as though they had left the dreary wilderness and entered something a little better. The promised land would be next, but there was still more sifting to be done. It's heavy to consider how much of a role complaining plays in where we end up. Not just complaining, but partaking if daily bread -participating in the gospel each day.

Also with noting is that even though the children of Israel murmured, the Lord provided salvation to those who repented and focused on Christ. He didn't forsake them, and as they repented, He fought their battles for them and granted them victories.

He will do the same for us if we repent and continuously strive to focus on Him.
