Before the Lord parted the river Jordan, the scriptures say the priests carrying the a Ark of the Covenant has to get their feet wet. They had to show their faith before the miracle happened. Sometimes we have to get our feet wet before we see the miracles God promises. Other times, we may need to wade in up to our necks in rushing water. And sometimes, like Peter, we may even begin to sink and drown but the Lord will stretch out His hand and save us.

Joshua 3 and the priests getting their feet wet does remind me of a certain fictional archeologist stepping off a cliff ledge in faith and funding solid ground to carry Him across to find eternal life. Thank you, George Lucas, for that parable.

Something else that came to mind as I read this morning was that one of the Lord's favorite miracles is to part water. He does this 4 times in the Old Testament. When I see a pattern like that, it's hard to ignore. So, I thought what is the meaning? Why part water?

In 3 of these instances, the Lord parts water to allow people to pass through to either safety, the promised land, or to where they are taken up to heaven. The fourth is when Elisha returns with the mantle of Elijah and crosses back over.

I find it instructive, especially in Joshua's case, that the water is parted leading to the promised land.

Christ is the living water. He is also the great mediator, the veil between us and Father. We must pass through the parted veil to reach our promised land, the celestial kingdom. I do not believe it's coincidence that the parting of waters was repeated multiple times. This symbolism helps emphasize the great plan of redemption, and I am grateful for the similar repetition and symbolism I enjoy in the house of the Lord.
