In 1 Nephi 14 it contrasts the great and abominable church to the church of The Lamb of God and referres to it as a whore and a harlot. I started wondering, why those names?
The church, or house of Israel, is often referred to as the bride and the Savior is the groom. There is a sacred covenant relationship between the two.
A whore gives a fake, lesser, and insulting version of what spouses give with fidelity to each other. A knockoff brand. Counterfeit.
Additionally, people have left relationships to chase the counterfeit harlots offer. They've tasted the fruit and because of mocking or FOMO, dropped it and left.
When we think of the marriage symbolism that is pervasive throughout the scriptures - when we think of Christ as the groom - the verbiage for the abominable church makes sense.
