Because the Pharaoh in Joseph's day was humble enough to listen to a prophet, his people, and many other nations were saved from a severe famine. Later, another Pharaoh constantly hardened his heart against the prophet Moses and thereby the Lord. The result was not just the loss of crops, but other plague and death. This is what happens to us spiritually when we choose not to follow the prophet. When we listen to the prophet, when we listen to the Spirit, when we listen to God - we progress forward on the covenant path.

Amos 3:7

Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.

Doctrine and Covenants 1:37

What I the Lord have spoken, I have spoken, and I excuse not myself; and though the heavens and the earth pass away, my word shall not pass away, but shall all be fulfilled, whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same.
