Last week I learned about a Hebrew translation that gives a different, more plausible, perspective on Sarah asking Abraham to send Hagar and Ishmael away. While the English translation may seem petty and make us wonder why Sarah acted that way, this perspective shows that Sarah, being wise and guided by the Spirit, realized that Isaac and Ishmael could not fulfill their roles and obtain the promises of the Lord to be kings over such great nations of they were to remain in such close proximity. The Hebrew word used to cast out or send away is actually the exact phrase used in the Garden of Eden, where Adam and Eve also could not progress further without being removed from their current state of bliss. Interestingly, we note this comparison continues it's parallel as it was Eve who first realized the need for growth. When Abraham consulted the Lord regarding Sarah's suggestion, the Lord confirmed that she was right.
I don't believe Sarah was petty, but inspired to help both Isaac and Ishmael achieve all the Lord has promised.
In Genesis 25, when Abraham passes away, Isaac and Ishmael bury him together. To me, that is beautiful, and makes me believe this new perspective even more.
