24 And thus saith the Lord: They shall stand as a bright testimony against this people, at the judgment day; whereof they shall be judged, every man according to his works, whether they be good, or whether they be evil.
25 And if they be evil they are consigned to an awful view of their own guilt and abominations, which doth cause them to shrink from the presence of the Lord into a state of misery and endless torment, from whence they can no more return; therefore they have drunk damnation to their own souls.
Reading these verses through the lens of the message I shared yesterday regarding grace, I noticed something new for the first time. We will be judged for our works but it doesn't say we will be given something different based on our works, rather that if our works be evil, we will have an awful view of it guilt. Rather than God saying this is what you earned or didn't earn, if we have not repented, changed, and practiced living a celestial life, WE will SHRINK from the presence of the Lord into a state of misery.
If are works are not meat for repentance, if we have not done all we can to prepare to meet God, our own guilt will cause us to say, like the youth from Brad Wilcox's story, "get me out of here!".
Christ saves us through grace. Our works determine who we become and where we will comfortably belong at the judgement day.
